A New Queer Space Adventure Is About to Arrive
Calling all animation fans, sci-fi lovers, and anyone who enjoys their cinema with a side of glitter, chaos, and big emotions, Lesbian Space Princess is officially landing in UK cinemas this June.
And yes, the title really does tell you a lot. This is not your standard space adventure filled with serious astronauts and dramatic galaxy-saving missions. Instead, it’s a colourful, queer, delightfully silly animated journey packed with romance, comedy, and a whole lot of cosmic drama.
Meet Princess Saira: The Galaxy’s Most Reluctant Hero
The story follows Princess Saira, a shy royal from Planet Clitopolis who would much rather avoid danger and stay comfortably in her own world.
But things take a dramatic turn when her bounty-hunter girlfriend Kiki breaks her heart, and is then kidnapped by a group of villains known as the Straight White Maliens.
Suddenly, Saira finds herself thrown into an enormous intergalactic rescue mission.
There’s just one small problem: the only thing that can save the day is the legendary royal labrys… and she doesn’t have it.
A Cosmic Quest Full of Chaos and Heart
What follows is a wild journey across the universe as Saira searches for the weapon, faces bizarre challenges, and discovers that she might be much stronger than she ever imagined.
Along the way, the film mixes classic adventure storytelling with plenty of humour, unexpected friendships, and a sweet reminder that confidence can come from the most surprising places.
A Fresh Take on Animation
Created by Australian writer-directors Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs, Lesbian Space Princess brings a colourful new energy to animated cinema.
The film blends bold visuals, playful sci-fi influences, and larger-than-life characters to create a world that feels completely its own.
It’s bright, weird, camp, and unapologetically fun, exactly the kind of film that proves animation isn’t just for kids.
Festival Buzz and Big Reactions
The film has already gained attention on the festival circuit, winning the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and making an impression with audiences at the Sydney Film Festival.
With its unique style and refreshing approach to queer storytelling, it’s quickly becoming one of the most talked-about animated releases.
A Voice Cast Bringing the Galaxy to Life
The film features a talented voice cast including Shabana Azeez, Bernie Van Tiel, Gemma Chua-Tran, Richard Roxburgh, and members of comedy group Aunty Donna.
Their performances help bring the film’s eccentric characters and hilarious moments to life.
More Than Just a Space Comedy
While Lesbian Space Princess is full of jokes, colourful planets, and ridiculous adventures, at its heart it’s a story about love, heartbreak, identity, and finding the courage to be yourself.
It’s a romantic comedy, a sci-fi adventure, and a coming-of-confidence story all rolled into one.
When Can You Watch It?
Whether you’re excited for the queer representation, the animation style, the space antics, or simply want to see a princess save the galaxy, Lesbian Space Princess looks set to be a fun addition to the cinema calendar.
The film arrives in UK and Irish cinemas from 19 June 2026.
If you are in Australia or New Zealand it’s available to watch via Netflix.
